Program Objectives

  • Build eco-friendly homes using local and sustainable materials
  • Reduce the carbon footprint of residential buildings
  • Improve resilience to floods and heatwaves
  • Train local artisans in green building techniques
  • Create green jobs in the construction sector

Methodology

Our approach integrates international best practices adapted to the Cameroonian context. We use bio-sourced materials (compressed earth, bamboo, certified wood), rainwater harvesting systems, and energy efficiency features (solar panels, natural ventilation).

Impact & Results

Since its launch, the program has enabled the construction of over 120 eco-friendly homes, trained 150 artisans, and significantly reduced energy costs for beneficiary households. The use of local materials has also stimulated the community economy.

Program Objectives

  • Document the floristic biodiversity of the Congo Basin
  • Train young scientists and eco-guards
  • Create an accessible digital database
  • Raise community awareness about conservation
  • Valorize traditional knowledge related to plants

Concrete Actions

CongoBotanika mobilizes young botanists, ecologists, and citizens to systematically inventory the flora of the Congo Basin. We organize scientific expeditions, create digital herbaria, and develop mobile applications for citizen science.

The program also works with indigenous communities to document traditional uses of medicinal and food plants, thus ensuring the preservation of this ancestral knowledge.

Impact & Achievements

Over 1200 species have been documented, including several new to science. Our database is used by international researchers and supports conservation planning. 800 young people have been trained in botanical inventory techniques.

Challenges & Issues

African coastal ecosystems (mangroves, coral reefs, seagrass beds) are essential for the food security of millions of people and act as major carbon sinks. Yet they are severely threatened by rising sea levels, plastic pollution, overfishing, and ocean acidification.

Our Solutions

  • Restoration of mangroves and coral reefs
  • Training of community marine eco-guards
  • Beach and ocean cleanup campaigns
  • Promotion of sustainable fishing and responsible aquaculture
  • Participatory monitoring of protected marine areas
  • Environmental education in coastal schools

Tangible Results

BlueGuard Africa has enabled the planting of 250,000 mangroves, the cleanup of 100 km of coastline, the training of 500 marine eco-guards, and the sensitization of over 10,000 fishermen to sustainable practices. Our actions directly contribute to SDG 14 (Life Below Water) and the fight against climate change.
